Free Money for ARMS, Please Vote in Florence Bank $100k Giveaway

Each year, Florence Bank gives away $100,000 to community non-profits through its Community Choice grants program. The bank's customers vote for the non-profit of their choice (one vote per account holder) & all non-profits getting at least 50 votes receive a grant.

Last year (2016), the Amherst Regional Public Schools PGO (ARPS PGO) received got 52 votes & $947. This money went for special projects, classroom support & more. 

This year, the parent guardian organizations of the ARPS PGO (Crocker Farm, Wildwood, Amherst MS, & Amherst HS) are campaigning jointly again to maximize our votes.

We need 50 votes total, just 13 votes per school, to win money to help our schools.

If you are a Florence Bank account holder, please help us and vote for the "Amherst Regional Public Schools PGO," the name of our joint non-profit. 

There are 2 easy ways to vote:
  1. Online - Visit https://www.florencebank.com/vote to view the online voting site & cast a vote for the "Amherst Regional Public Schools PGO."
     
  2. Paper Ballot - Ballots are available at any Florence Bank location. 
Voting closes on December 31st, less than 3 weeks from now.

Reminders About Accessing School Delay & Cancellation Information

Information related to school delays or cancellations:
  • Delays or cancellations are posted first on our closing line at 362-1898 (with a goal of posting by 5:30 a.m.).
  • Notification is made next to the local television stations.
  • Delays are typically two-hours, although a one-hour delay can be called. With delays, students are expected to report the appropriate number of hours later than the regular school day and should plan to be at bus stops based on those times, as well.
La información relacionada con retrasos o cancelaciones escolares:
  • Las demoras o cancelaciones se publican primero en nuestra línea de cierre en 362-1898 (con el objetivo de publicar antes de las 5:30 a.m.).

Winter Field Hockey Indoor Clinic

Having fun is our goal!!! The program is designed for new players who want to see how much fun field hockey can be, as well as experienced players and will involve games, scrimmages and opportunities to play in local indoor tournaments. We will teach both fundamentals including basic rules, proper grip and posture, ball and stick control, and passing and receiving for new players, and more advanced skills for the returning players via fun games. Players are asked to provide their own shin guards, mouth guard, and sneakers. Sticks will be provided if you need to borrow one. 

WHO: Girls and Boys in grades 1 to 12 
WHEN: Saturday evenings, January 6 to March 17 (No program January 13 or March 3). Tournament on February 18

Grades 1st-6th 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Grades 7th-12th 7:30- 9:00 p.m.

WHERE: Chestnut Hill Community School Gymnasium, Belchertown (only 11 miles from downtown Amherst)

ARMS Book Swap-Palooza happens THIS WEEK (12/5-7)

The Book Swap takes place from December 5-7 during Guided Study. What is a book swap? Donate books you no longer want and select free books that you can keep. Every student will get to take home at least 1 FREE book from the used books that are donated! Drop off donations in your English Class or the Library before December 5th. This is a great opportunity to recycle your gently-used books (appropriate for middle school readers, please).

Please come to Book Swap-Palooza, after school in the ARMS library, on Thursday, Dec 7, 2:30-3:45pm. Meet the authors of the Pencil Bandit, and join in the a Bad Rap Contest and Book Party. Join us for the ARMS Bad Rap Contest and Book Party, hosted by Mister El-Are and Henry Reade, author of The Pencil Bandits series of comedy adventures. Rhyme for fun and win a prize. You don’t have to be good—just brave. The audience picks the winners, so bring your friends!

Take as many books as you can carry from the books that remain at the end of the swap. Pencil Bandits books will be available to purchase.


7th Grade Parent/Guardian/Teacher Conference Sign-ups

Dear Parents/Guardians of Seventh Grade Students:

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a conference with your student’s teacher to discuss their school experiences and how we may collaborate for ongoing success. Every year, after spending time getting to know our 7th grade students, we schedule parent/guardian conferences with all ARMS 7th grade families. Our goals are to share what we have learned and plan together how to maximize each student's success for the remainder of 7th grade and into the 8th grade year.

Congratulations to Ms. Khalea Glasgow, ARMS paraeducator, for being recognized by our school district as an ARPS Shining Star! We surprised Khalea by presenting her award in the middle of science class! We appreciate the multifaceted qualities that Ms. Glasgow brings to our students.

Teen Painting & Drawing Class

There are still a couple of spaces in the upcoming Teen Painting and Drawing class, starting this Thursday, November 30th!  It’s a great opportunity for teens to get involved in an enriching after school activity where they can engage in self expression in a supportive environment. Something for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Items will be available for distribution to ARMS students (or pickup in the ARMS office if you prefer) on December 8.

  • Everybody who is able donates books you no longer want or need.
  • After all books are donated, choose a book from the donations.
  • You get to keep the book you select!
  • Every student gets to take home at least ONE FREE BOOK from the books that are donated (even if you are unable to donate to the book swap)!
  • If you have books that you no longer want AND that you think your middle school classmates would enjoy, PLEASE donate them to the book swap!

At Joy Art Space students experience the joy of creating art while developing new skills and finding their unique artistic voice! Joy Art Space offers private art lessons and small group classes for children, teens, and adults in painting, drawing, sculpture, fashion design, and more! Students learn art techniques in a warm, supportive environment.

Warm Winter Clothing Drive

To help everyone stay warm this winter, the Amherst school parent & guardian organizations (PGOs) are collecting winter coats & other outerwear for students (preK through 12th grade) & families. 

We are seeking donations of clean, gently-used winter outerwear: in ALL sizes (especially student sizes), including coats, snow pants, snow boots, hats, jackets, gloves/mittens, scarves, and snowsuits. 

Items will be collected at ARMS from November 6 through December 1, both in the lobby and outside the auditorium. Distribution for ARMS students will be through the ARPS Family Center (located in the middle school building) from November 20 into December (as supplies last). Any items not given out at the schools will be donated to the Amherst Survival Center.

Beginning in the cafeteria, we’ll indulge in an epic community dessert potluck, and then head down the hall to the auditorium, where we will watch a movie – either Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Wonder Woman (voting by ARMS students is still ongoing, and these two are neck and neck for the lead).

Amherst Education Foundation (AEF) is hosting its 23rd annual Trivia Bee on October 26 in the Middle School auditorium and is thrilled to announce that we have added a new round for kids ages 14 and under. State Representative Solomon Goldstein-Rose will emcee the event, and we will have local community leaders act as judges for the prizes. 

As with the adult rounds, participants will compete in teams of 4 and are encouraged to come up with a team name and wear costumes. We will have special prizes for best costumes, best spirit, and more. The Kids Round will run from 6:00pm-7:00pm.

  • October 24: Picture Retake Day – Pictures will be in approximately one week prior to this date. Picture packages will be distributed in the next week or two. If you would like to have the picture retaken, please return the complete package to the main office on or before Friday, October 20 to get on the list for retakes.

Soup for Survival and Puerto Rico MONDAY, 5:30-7:00pm

Please join us for Soup for Survival and Puerto Rico, Monday Oct 16, 5:30-7:00 in the school cafeteria at Amherst Regional Middle School.

Open to all families, friends, community members! Soup dinner is free - Eat soup, see the beauty, strength and resilience of Puerto Rican cultural expressions in dance, drumming, music and more by students, staff, families. 

Cash donations will go directly to Hispanic Federation to support those in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Leftover food will be donated to our local Survival Center to support those in Amherst. 

If you are donating soup, bread, or vegetables, our school kitchen opens at 6am and you can drop it off anytime tomorrow morning after 6am.

Because You Gave, the PGO Awarded ARMS Teachers $1500

Thanks to your support of the PGO, $1,500 was recently awarded to ARMS teachers to support a variety of enrichment programs. These programs include:
  • setting up a recording studio for students so they can produce films, music, podcasts, and other creative works;
  • a team-building field trip for Team A to Project Adventure in Springfield;
  • creating a mural of the Connecticut River Valley as part of the 7th-grade interdisciplinary study;
  • bringing Shakespeare & Co. to ARMS to perform A Midsummer Night's Dream for the 8th grade;
  • and bringing Evelyn Harris and other artists to ARMS to present the music of the Harlem Renaissance.
Your generous gifts to the PGO and support of our fundraisers made it all possible. Thank you!

The Amherst Regional Public Schools Parent Guardian Organization (ARPS PGO) is a Registered 501c3 Massachusetts Charity encompassing the individual PGOs of the Amherst Regional High and Middle Schools, Crocker Farm and Wildwood Elementary.

Our mission is to support the education of children within our schools through fundraising, supplemental programming and volunteer efforts. We help build community by fostering relationships among the schools, parents, teachers and staff.
