Next PGO Meeting – Calling all 7th Grade Parents
Our next PGO meeting will be Tuesday, April 3, at noon at The Works in downtown Amherst.
Our focus for this meeting will be the 8th grade end-of-the-year social and picnic (which 7th grade parents traditionally take the lead on) and plans for next year. If you are a 7th grade parent (or an 8th grade parent with a rising 7th grader) and think you might be able to help out next year, please join us. Most of the current PGO leadership is headed to the high school next year, and we really need some new faces for next year. If you would like to get involved, but can’t make the meeting, please contact us at armspgo@gmail.com.
Community Choice Grant Awarded
This week, the ARPS PGO was awarded a Community Choice Grant of $1,413.00 from Florence Bank. The money will be used to support PGO initiatives within our member schools. Thank you to all who voted for us.
Congrats to the almost 60 nonprofits in our community who also received grants through this annual program. Since the Community Choice Grants program started 16 years ago, Florence Bank has given away more than $1 million to community non-profits.
The Amherst Regional Public Schools Parent Guardian Organization (ARPS PGO) is a Registered 501(c)(3) Massachusetts Charity encompassing the individual PGOs of the Amherst Regional High and Middle Schools, Crocker Farm and Wildwood Elementary.

March For Our Lives (Amherst), 3/24
Join in an Amherst Community March on Saturday, March 24 to show our support for the students in Parkland, FL at Stoneman-Douglas High School who have planned a march in Washington, DC on this date. It is being called, “March For Our Lives”
Bring your friends, your signs, and your enthusiasm for efforts to change the gun laws and to help our country become less gun-oriented.
We will assemble at the south end of Kendrick Park (across the street from Bertuucci's) at 10 AM and will march to the Town Common. There we will sing some songs and share in a community event to mourn the loss of those we have lost, to speak out against our saturated gun culture and call for a change!

Notes from Principal Patty
Last Tuesday, Feb 27th, US Congressman Jim McGovern read a letter on the floor of the House of Representatives that was written to him by a group of ARMS students. He inserted the letter into the Congressional record. We watched McGovern's speech live on C-SPAN during 8th grade lunch. Here is a segment of the video:
The Road to Freedom: Portraits of People with Disabilities is a photo-text exhibit now on view from Family Diversity Projects in our ARMS Lobby-Gallery. This exhibit is the centerpiece of our school-wide curriculum on disability rights which was kicked off on February 16th when we all wen to see the movie, Wonder. Last year, ARMS hosted two other exhibits, and this opportunity continues a our explicit honor of the dignity and worth of each human being while cultivating empathy and solidarity. Each ARMS Advisory Group will be engaged in the curriculum which includes guided interactive visits to the exhibit. See more about it at: https://familydiv.org/exhibits/the-road-to-freedom/
Reminder this Friday, March 9th is a Curriculum day for all teachers, so students will not have school. ARMS teachers will be attending workshops on topics of Equity and Diversity in the morning and working in their collaborative Research Inquiry Groups in the afternoon.
We launched a unit on learning about water treatment in science class! A grant funded by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Drinking Water Program written by UMass Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, John Tobiason, provides these collaborative activities with the Hitchcock Center, UMASS and ARMS. Brittany Gutermuth was hired through the Hitchcock Center to co-teach lessons with each of the 7th and 8th grade science teachers, and to organize the field trips for the 8th graders. Science teacher, Jennifer Welborn worked with Dr. John Tobiason and Colleen Kelley at the Hitchcock Center to plan these lessons and field trips. Many thanks for the partnership from Department of Environmental Protection Drinking Water Program, UMass Dept of Engineering and Hitchcock Center for the Environment!
