Youth Action Coalition's Arts-for-Change Programs ready to launch!

Youth Action Coalition (YAC) promotes youth empowerment through creative expression and social action projects. YAC’s core project, Arts-for-Change, is a series of distinct arts and media programs offered to youth in Amherst, Ware and Easthampton. Through the development of art and media skills, creative writing, group collaboration and social justice education and action, Arts-for-Change fosters community, embraces change, and promotes fun.  AfC provides youth from across the race/class/social spectrum access to free, high quality arts programming, helping youth break down barriers, and offering a safe space for shared dialogue and collaboration.

Our 2012-13 Amherst offerings:

GirlsEyeView (GEV) offers a supportive and creative space for young women to express themselves through photography and creative writing. We shoot with black and white film and manual cameras, develop our prints in the darkroom, write stories and poems, share our ideas about important social justice issues, and laugh! In GEV you will also exhibit your work several times a year in our schools and community spaces.

Open to 7th-9th grade girls
Meets Tues/Thurs, 2:30-5PM in the Photo Lab at Amherst Regional High School.

A few important points: our programs are a bigger commitment than the other clubs -- 2 days/week for 2-2 1/2 hours throughout the school year.  We often have students who take time off for a sport, but prefer to have students who can commit to the full year (and want to be there for students who are not active in sports and other activities). We have an application process (mostly to garner commitment, but also used if the program is oversubscribed to ensure diversity). See attached.

If you have any questions please contact the coordinator of the respective program or Allison Scott, Programs Liaison, allison@youthactioncoalition.org. Our website is also full of info and a gallery of images.
