College Power: Find Your Path to College : Poder Colegial: Encuentra tu Camino al Colegio
The ARPS Family Center is offering “College Power” a free pilot mentoring program for income-eligible students who want to be the first generation in their family to attend college. Trained mentors help students expand their vision of the world and its opportunities, develop their own story, connect school performance to success in life, and negotiate the complex procedure of applying to college. Parent or guardian support is an important part of this process. The program is currently open to students in grades 7-11 and requires completing a simple application. The application is available at the main/guidance offices of the Amherst
Regional Middle and High School. The application is due Thursday, April 17, 2014 to the main
or guidance office at each school.

A Message from Our Principal : Un Mensaje de Pricipal Dinger
Happy Spring! We are all preparing for the final stretch to the end of the year. The staff of the middle school is working hard to plan engaging lessons and activities that help keep students engaged during this busy time of year. We know many kids are spending more time in the evening with friends and engaged in activities as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. To help students finish strong, we know they will likely need extra monitoring and help structuring their time in the coming weeks. I appreciate all of the efforts from staff and families in helping students manage the busy spring.
I wanted to share some thoughts about an important issue in our district. As most of you are aware, we have identified a number of issues associated with race that we must continue to address in our schools and in our community. Student and community member’s voices, teacher concerns, and the incidents of racist acts made toward a staff member of the high school continue to highlight the need for concrete steps to address this issue. Here at the middle school, we have been working on deepening our understanding about issues of equity and race. Over the past six months, the staff has engaged in faculty meetings focused upon stereotype threat, privilege, observer versus actor perspectives, listening to student voices, and strategies to address stereotype threat. In addition, teachers and administrators are examining our curriculum to find ways to
teach students and staff how to talk about race and issues of equity; learn about the history of racism, classism, etc.; and study the way these histories impact our lives today. Staff is also examining the Code of Conduct and strategies to address social and behavioral learning including Active Bystander training. I want to thank ARMS families who have been very willing to share their thoughts and ideas with me. In addition, I want to thank my colleagues for their desire and commitment to learning about issues associated with race and equity. The staff is working hard at recognizing the impact race has upon our students, our school and our community and working on creating strategies to address this critical issue. I am looking forward to our continued efforts and commitment to addressing racism and inequity in our school and our community.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our students, staff and community partners for their excellent efforts during our recent lock down. The response began with a student paying attention to the “uh-oh” feeling and taking immediate action to tell an adult about his concern. His actions allowed us to go into our lock down which is designed to ensure that all students are cared for in their classrooms and instruction continues while authorities assess the situation to ensure the well being of all in the school. As we have explained to students and in previous family communication, lock down is used when there is a possibility of a threat and we need to assess the situation. During lock down, students continue to work in classrooms but we restrict movement into and throughout the building. There is a second level of response if an immediate
threat is present in the building. At this time, the school is alerted to a Shelter in Place. In this case, class activities do not continue and additional precautions are taken in each classroom. In the past, we have used lock downs (some announced, others just announced to safety captains) for a variety of reasons including maintaining the privacy of people who required medical attention and external circumstances such as the alleged armed robbery that occurred in Amherst two years ago. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions about our practices.
We are currently planning the end of the year activities. There are a number of fun events coming up. We want to share the end of the year dates with you now so you can get them on your calendar.
Finally, just a reminder that the last day of school is Wednesday, June 25. Term 3 (Final) Report Cards will be mailed home on Tuesday, July 1. Enjoy the sunshine!
¡Feliz Primavera!
